Zak Crawley – One

Expected for Aussie conditions however recorded only the fourth duck in both innings by an English opener facing only a handful of deliveries.

Ben Duckett – Five

Made starts in both innings. The way he got out on Saturday was when things started to fall apart for England.

Ollie Pope – 6

Seems improved for technical tweaks. The first Test of a series tends to be his strongest, then it goes downhill. The team need him to build on this.

Joe Root – 1

Far off his maiden century on Australian soil. England require the wisdom from their star performer if they are to come back from this.

Brook – 5

His half-century in the first innings was lively, but valuable. Poor shot in the follow-on.

Stokes – Six

Came back from injury to take a five-wicket haul, but appeared out of touch when batting. Lost control while fielding against Head's assault.

Smith – 4

Could have the game to succeed in Australia, but needs to improve. Will likely face plenty of bouncers going forward.

Atkinson – Five

Involved in the impressive England initial bowling effort and attempted to contribute while batting later on. Part of the bowlers that fell apart on Saturday evening.

Carse – Five

Comparable to the previous, with added mustard of being dominated by Head.

Jofra Archer – Five

Looked impressive with the ball initially and proved the top of a bad bunch in the second. Might yet play a key role on the series.

Mark Wood – Five

Went wicketless, yet extremely commendable to even take part given his time away.

Australia Player Evaluations

Weatherald – 6

First-timer had tough luck to be exposed against Archer early on, later played his part in the stunning run chase.

Usman Khawaja – Three

An unusual Test. Did not look fully fit and spent time off the field. Held on to a couple of key catches in the slips, yet also looked slow in the cordon. Earns a point due to his injury that allowed Head to open.

Labuschagne – 7

An effective return to the team. Handled England's bowling pressure more effectively than others in the first innings, then supported Head later.

Smith – 5

Seemed out of sorts early on. Unnecessary pre-match comments on Monty Panesar.

Travis Head – Nine

Perhaps churlish not to award a perfect score, but he played a rather poor shot initially. His second-innings century proved to be an historic innings.

Green – Five

Took the key wicket of Pope in the first innings. Shaken by a Wood bouncer during his innings. Hardly required later in the match.

Carey – 5

Tried an aggressive response against England's bowlers on the first evening. Tidy with the gloves.

Mitchell Starc – 9

Shouldered the weight of the bowling without Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood achieving the first Aussie Ashes 10-wicket haul for two decades.

Scott Boland – 6

Short of his best in the first innings. Improved in the second to spark the English collapse.

Doggett – Six

Solid first appearance. Quite capable stand-in for the main bowlers and Hazlewood.

Nathan Lyon – Two

Almost an onlooker during a game controlled by pace. Maybe picked up an injury after being hit by Wood.
