Cameron Norrie secured the most important victory of his career by coming back from a set down to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Even though he had before defeated Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win represents Norrie's initial win over a current world No 1.

"Huge. Incredibly significant for me," commented Norrie, who joins as the newest English competitor in the record books to overcome a top-ranked player. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the initial match of qualies here. I just aimed to appreciate my game in the closing months of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the biggest win of my professional life, my maiden triumph over the top player and probably the strongest competitor in the sport right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st in the world, also stopped Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine finals in a row and 17 consecutive premier event wins, which marked the best series of results in the Spaniard's young career.

Match Breakdown

The top seed seemed to be advancing smoothly towards victory in the beginning as he sailed in the first set. Yet, Norrie slowly fought his way into contention by serving with sharper placement and dragging the Spaniard into extended, grueling exchanges. His unceasing steadiness and dependability slowly made an impact.

During large parts of the contest, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he found it challenging to locate his rhythm on his baseline shots. The rising talent looked notably uncomfortable hitting his forehand, which has been the best shot in the world for most of this season, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 errors. Across the net, Norrie offered Alcaraz very few errors, sustaining his steadiness, athleticism and depth throughout while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to advance forward and play aggressively.

Following struggling for a long time due to a significant left forearm injury and difficulties with his performance, the tennis professional fell as low as No 91 this season. Following appearances in the advanced stages at the grass-court major and the Roland Garros round of 16 since then, this win reinforces the experienced player's development as he aims to return to the elite rankings and beyond. Alcaraz, in spite of his remarkable success, is yet to figure out how to produce his finest performance indoors.
