Delhi Awakens to Toxic Haze Following Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to severely hazardous air that was classified as the "critical" category.

Alarming Air Quality Measurements

Multiple areas of the city recorded an pollution measurement above 500, which translates to 10x the recommended level recommended by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1800, equating to 15-20x above acceptable standards.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Developments

For the past four years, officials had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous pollution that blankets the city as the cold season begins.

However in recent months, the recently formed local leadership petitioned the highest court to request a easing of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a balance between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Despite concerns of public health and environmental activists, the court approved the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread disregard of the regulated periods across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Many monitoring devices throughout the city registered pollution spiking around midnight to the most severe levels recorded during Diwali in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Consequences

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also initiated a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to declining pollution levels in their urban centers on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation showing no improvement.

Near Diwali, the amount of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to spike to seventy percent above the most severe levels ever recorded in Beijing, which was formerly viewed as the planet's dirtiest city.

Various Pollution Sources

This crisis in the capital is caused by a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from farm burning in adjacent areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating toxic haze that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as cooler air arrives.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple investigations.

The contaminated air causes increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

The pollution is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 untimely fatalities per year in the city.
