The distinctive yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us locate the footage.
Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures originated was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
