Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD released video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a child.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
