The Labour Party's Traditional Base Faces Strong Challenge

The Labour party has led in the Welsh parliament since the regional government was created in 1999, with the area serving as one of its major bases. Yet, opposition parties hoping to establish the next Welsh government have conducted fierce campaigns in this constituency in southern Wales.

Voting locations started receiving voters at 7am on Thursday and will close at 10pm, with the result anticipated in the early hours of the following day.

According to latest surveys, Plaid Cymru and Reform have been projected as the two biggest parties in Wales next year. The result in Caerphilly could serve as a gauge for the Welsh parliament election in spring and is likely to be viewed that way by the successful candidate's party.

Budget Vote Adds Further Stakes

The by-election also takes place in the lead-up to a decision regarding the next budget for Wales, which has increased the stakes on the Labour party's efforts. When voting on spending in earlier this year, the government had to seek the support of an opposition member to get it through.

Even though Labour is the largest party in the Welsh parliament, it lacks a controlling majority, and the spending decision in winter could be even more difficult if the Labour party loses the Caerphilly seat.
