Six oddball but brave youngsters fall into the path of a vast and terrible paranormal darkness that has infiltrated our realm from the deepest abyss of darkness. They must devote their lives confronting it, experiencing terror upon terror in the ordeal.

A Familiar Plot with a New Approach

This is the plot, in essence, of Stephen King’s seminal work It (arguably his finest; no arguments). It similarly frames of Stephen King’s offspring Joe Hill’s latest chilling tome, in which a close-knit group invoke the age-old, infinitely malicious serpent the Dragon King from the Endless Night to aid them in overcoming some antagonists. Needless to say, their arcane ceremony goes awry.

Embracing a Family Heritage

The author started his career making great efforts to remain separate from his famous father, adopting the nom de plume he still uses today and avoiding meeting his agent (he possesses a strong similarity to his dad). However, in his newest work, he leans into it. Several quotes that consciously reflect some of King’s most famous (“The man in black fled across the desert …”); a moment that brings to mind a King plot point (a game of puzzles). In this epic story, Hill is delighting in his lineage, and readers share in the joy.

The Cast of the Protagonists

Focusing on the companions: most are pupils at the made-up the esteemed institution in the New England state. We have Arthur, studious and brilliant, cracking ancient puzzles in his free moments; the character Colin, rich, clever, and known for crushing obstacles in his path; twins Donna and Donovan; the stunning the lovely Allie. Additionally, Gwen appears, who isn’t their classmate, but emerges as crucial of their group as they experiment, partly convinced, half not, in arcane arts.

The Pivotal Ceremony

The protagonist finds himself, for reasons we don’t need to go into, forced into stealing rare books from his treasured institution’s archives by a group of neighborhood thugs. This wounds his academic spirit, notably because he’s forced to acquire the library’s most valuable and chilling work: the logbook of occultist this enigmatic character (put to death “for conspiring with dark forces in 1703”; the cover is made from his skin). Our Scooby gang examine the log, discover they could summon what the author references as a “arrogant beast to help Arthur out with his coercion issue – and devote the remaining story enduring the repercussions. The dragon will indeed rid them of those troublesome local drug dealers, but they must select a fresh offering annually or succumb to the dragon’s wrath. As our protagonist states: “You plant seeds of destruction, all you get is additional horrors.”

Stylistic Fluidity and Inventive Scope

Covering a generation, the author shifts with natural fluency across narrative styles: as the allies endeavor to address the situation they find themselves in by, through diverse methods, selecting clearly malevolent individuals to sacrifice, or hunting down ways to destroy the entity themselves, we move between suspense to shadowy tale, black-ops torture to romance to fright. My favorite genre switch was to a heroic journey, far beneath the surface beneath this UK region, a section infused with the Lord of the Rings author that was wonderfully frightening.

A Detailed Canvas of Dread and Optimism

We encounter trolls – those living under bridges and online ones, truly terrifying and perfectly brought to life. There are magical swords and deceptions, heart-stopping scenes of valor and scenes of terrible wickedness, both human and otherworldly. This is a remarkable achievement: a horror novel that is chiefly a paean to the creative spirit, and to affection and camaraderie. “We required a narrative to trust and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says this character as the allies gather at the table, preparing to summon their beast to life with the force of their minds.

As Hill puts it in his introductory quote: “This is dragon territory”. Do not overlook this.
