The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
