The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
