The people of Israel observe second anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations advance
Israelis have come together around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.
The assault saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel answered by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"The violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will never again pose a risk to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled state memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of people who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the plan.
A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative explained the day's discussions concluded without significant progress, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the opening period of the agreement.
He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet produce any significant progress," but noted that facilitators are working hard to narrow the gaps between the both parties.
Key Issues in Negotiations
- A lasting ceasefire
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid provision
- Future administration of the area
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "No place seems like home anymore and until every captive come back not a single person will have peace of mind."
"When we see everyone home again, we can breathe again. Then we can start to heal," she continued.
Near the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports 48 remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Protester a participant explained: "We need do every compromise necessary for the hostages to return. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israelis want the war to conclude in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli shelling continued.
In the urban center, attacks were documented in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.
"Once the evening comes, the dread appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike last year, shared.
"My family are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, notably my youngest child who places his face on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."
Health Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had taken in the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city said another two victims had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south, medics reported.
