Vince Gilligan Shares He Knows How Pluribus Will Conclude... Currently.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular series reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Does the showrunner See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why not reference the classics?
“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
