What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 people perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
