Why the DNC Refuses to Release its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: The Inside Story.

This action from the Democratic National Committee to block the release regarding its own autopsy report on the 2024 election is remarkable but to be expected. Resistant to frank assessments, the DNC behaves closer to a publicity machine rather than a political organization devoted to building a volunteer base to secure victories.

A Climate That Avoids Dissent

Reluctant to challenge the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has continued under the influence of the previous administration throughout 2025. Making public an official autopsy might have shown whether party leaders actually want to promote open debate about the strategic failures that enabled Donald Trump to win re-election. Yet, the DNC is proceeding as if there are no lessons to glean following the tragic debacle from the last cycle.

"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? Should the answer be negative, it is an unnecessary diversion from what truly matters," a rationale reportedly given for withholding the report.

Critical Problems an Autopsy Could Have Addressed

A genuine analysis with any value would tackle head-on key points of failure. These include:

  • Voter Disengagement: Losing among millions of voters that backed the Democratic ticket in 2020 proved pivotal during the tight 2024 election.
  • The Insistence to Run: The stubborn choice of a party leader to stay in the race, coupled with an extremely delayed exit, is viewed as denying the party's base the chance for a genuine choice.
  • Failing Core Democratic Voters: During a time of rising costs, the campaign is criticized for bowing to corporate donors' interests without successfully attempting to confront the impact of corporate greed.
  • A Foreign Policy Factor: An unwillingness to reconsider a stance regarding the situation in Gaza is cited as losing many voters, particularly among youth voters, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
  • Eroding Youth Backing: Extensive evidence demonstrates a huge decline in support for the party from the youth electorate.

A History of Evasion

The decision to withhold fits a recurring tendency to avoid difficult realities. It recalls a dynamic where virtually every elected Democrat in Congress acquiesced to an incumbent's decision for running for re-election right up until a disastrous public debate performance compelled a reversal.

At the same time, overwhelming numbers of Democratic voters had been repeatedly informing researchers that they did not want that candidate to be the nominee.

Campaign Spending Concerns

A thorough analysis would also investigate questions about financial allocations, such as what sums went to high-priced advisors and advertising contractors during a campaign which expended a staggering war chest during the general election.

A Larger Problem

Ultimately, the secrecy regarding the analysis highlights an allegiance toward party leaders who engineered an unsuccessful presidential campaign. The implication for the party's base – which includes countless dedicated activists – is that they cannot have a right to know what the insiders claim to have learned from hundreds of interviews based on feedback from all states.

A political entity unwilling to critically review where it went wrong finds it difficult to break free from the rut that proved so helpful to the rival party.
